The trick is to select the frame(s) with the Selection tool, then press T to switch to the Type tool. Menu Bar The old menu items 'Documents, Comments, Forms, Tools and Advanced' are gone and. One way to access these areas is via the 'view' menu by clicking 'tools' or 'show/hide'. There are four main areas in Acrobat that can be accessed. For example, if you have the Type tool selected and a text cursor flashing in a text frame, the Object Style and Effects panels gray out.Īlternatively, if you select a text frame with the Selection tool, the Character and Paragraph panels gray out, even though InDesign does allow you to apply text formatting to all the text inside a frame when you select it (or more than one text frame) with the Selection tool. You can use the menu 'View > Tools > any tool category' or the 'F8' key to restore the tool bars. One of the most common reasons for things being grayed out is having selected the “wrong” tool.

I still don’t really understand that one. I turned that off and, wow!, smart guides became enabled again. What the heck? It took me a while of searching around until I realized that someone working on the document had enabled View > Grids & Guides > Snap to Document Grid (a feature I rarely think about, much less use). The guides just wouldn’t show up! When I looked at the View > Grids & Guides menu, it showed it as “on” but it was grayed out. Here’s another one that got me recently: Smart Guides (one of my favorite features in CS4 and later) wasn’t working in a document. That is, if you turn off Overprint Preview, the panel disables, too. Perhaps they were active a moment ago, but not now! What’s up? Well, this panel is linked to View > Overprint Preview. Separations panelįor example, you may see all your inks in the Separations Preview panel, but they may all be grayed out.

What is going on? Well, it’s usually because the feature is “linked with” or “dependent on” some other feature.

I know it should work, but it’s not working! Sometimes the feature is even grayed out (disabled) in some menu or panel, even when I don’t think it should be. The least Adobe could do is make even a head fake toward caring whether its marketing strategy also robs customers of productivity-because time really is the one asset one can never recoup.Something that drives me crazy: I try a feature and it doesn’t work.

Does no one from Adobe monitor this forum?Īdobe premeditates its products' obsolescence by making backward compatibility an unattainable daydream, thus conscripting buyers of its newer products to proliferate no-longer-fully portable documents produced with the newer versions, which by their growing predominance force its original customers to continually buy ever-more expensive, memory-intensive, and clunky products (Do any other dinosaurs survive out there who might remember, for instance, how quickly one could insert form fields on the fly in 5.0?). To crop the bottom of a single page by 2.88 inches to get it to 11 inches with click-and-drag cropping (to include displaying the ruler, which must be done each and every time I start Acrobat) takes dozens of seconds, while using the crop margin feature (judging from my experience in Acrobat 5.0, where the key sequence is Shift/Ctrl/t => Alt/b => 2.88 => => ) would take just seconds.Īs I understand the history, since you first reported this problem 14 posts and nearly ten months ago, other users have reported the same problem, and Adobe has issued several updates-yet the bug remains.

There has to be a compromise between responsivity and the inevitable complaints when software updates itself too frequently, especially for products like Acrobat where users have significant enterprise customization.

A single non-exploitable bug won't usually warrant an update in its own right, but each cycle aims to roll in as many fixes as possible. There is a defined cycle for update releases, and out-of-band patches are only pushed for critical issues. In terms of product patches, Adobe does not usually give future-facing statements about what features will be included in which forthcoming update, except for those triggered by PSIRT.

Print Production in Acrobat Pro is a hidden panel by default, you must show it using the dropdown menu on the Tools Pane header bar.Īlthough the dialog you're seeing is nominally the same for both, the route to get there within the code is different, hence the possibility of a bug in one but not the other. "Set Page Boxes" is on the Tools Pane / Print Production Panel, and opens the dialog directly with blank fields. "Crop" is the tool button on the Tools Pane / Pages Panel, which is interactive - you must draw a region on the page and double-click it to open the dialog, at which point it is pre-populated with the bounds of the rectangle you just drew.
